The Northeastern women’s soccer team made the best of its scoring chances in its opening game on Friday evening, as junior Jennifer North scored the overtime game-winning goal in the 97th minute to defeat St. John’s at the Comfort Suites/URI Invitational, 1-0.
North’s goal, which came from 18 yards out, was just the fifth shot on net by the Huskies in the match. Northeastern was also outshot, 22-10, in the game.
NU goalkeeper Cynthia Slowik may have provided the biggest boost for the Huskies though, posting 12 saves in her first shutout of the season. Red Storm keeper Gabriela Franco made four saves in her first start in net.
The Huskies will play their final game of the tournament against host team Rhode Island on Sunday at 1 p.m.
