Junior co-captain Andi Matthews found the right time to pick up her first goal of the season, scoring the game-winner in the 74th minute to give the Northeastern women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over conference rival Albany at Varsity Field on Thursday.
Sophomore Jess Pfeifer set up the goal with a pass to Matthews, who finished it off with a shot to the right side of the net.
The NU defense was a stronghold throughout the match, limiting Albany to just four shots in the game, all coming in the second half. The Huskies controlled offensively, recording 23 shots on the day. Freshman goalkeeper Annie Petrofsky, making her first start in net as a Husky, was forced to make just one save, but it was a key one, coming with less than two minutes to play in regulation. Senior goalkeeper Erika Van Zandt posted seven saves in the losing effort for Albany.
The Huskies have now tied the record for wins in a season, improving to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in America East play. The Great Danes drop to 1-15-1 overall and remain winless in the league at 0-7-0.
The Huskies return to action next Thursday when they host cross-town rival Boston University in an important America East matchup at 3 p.m. on Parsons Field.
