The Northeastern women’s soccer team controlled the ball through most of the game on Friday night, but came away with a tough 1-0 loss in its home opener against Long Island at Parsons Field.
LIU junior forward Nichole Lopez made the Huskies pay for their one slip-up when she buried the game-winning goal past NU goalkeeper Annie Petrofsky on a pass from Allison Andreano in the 77th minute. The shot was just Long Island's third on goal in the game.
Both squads generated little offense in the first half of play, but it was Northeastern that came out strong in the second with seven shots. The Huskies had their chances, including a direct kick from freshman Kristen Blake that nailed the crossbar with 8:39 to play. Sophomore Kristin Kowalik also had a great opportunity in front of the net with 1:34 remaining, but Long Island goalkeeper Stephanie Kansky was able to come up with the big save.
The Huskies outshot the Blackbirds, 9-6, in the match. Kansky recordes six saves in the shutout for her first win of the season. Cynthia Slowik, who started the game in net for NU, posted two saves and didn’t allow a goal. Petrofsky, who made her collegiate debut in goal at the beginning of the second half, picked up the loss.
Northeastern will look to rebound on Wednesday when they host Iona at 3 p.m. at Parsons Field.
