| Redshirt freshman Kristin Kowalik led the way for the women’s soccer team with one goal and two assists, as the Huskies went on to defeat the Manhattan Jaspers, 3-0, on Saturday night at Parsons Field.
Despite a slow start to the first half with little offense generated on either side of the field, Northeastern turned it up in the final 10 minutes of the period. After a few good scoring chances, sophomore Jess Pfeifer finally converted for the Huskies, scoring the game-winning goal on a pass down low from Kowalik into a wide open net with 5:51 remaining. NU would strike again before the end of the period, as Kowalik set up junior co-captain Liz Dyjak right in front of the net for a blast past the Jasper goalkeeper, giving them a 2-0 lead.
Kowalik would add some insurance in the second half, scoring on a hard shot to the top right corner of the net on a feed from freshman Kristen Blake in the 61st minute, giving Northeastern a 3-0 lead.
The shooting in the match was one-sided, as NU outshot the Jaspers 21-3. Huskies’ goalkeeper Cynthia Slowik was forced to make just one save in the game, while Manhattan’s Jeanne Marie Gilbert posted eight saves in the loss. Northeastern also had a significant advantage in corner kicks at 10-1.
The Huskies improved to 5-3 overall this season, while the Jaspers fall to 0-8. Northeastern returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 2, when they take on Binghamton in the America East conference opener.
