| In its 2006 regular season finale, the Northeastern women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against host Hofstra at the Hofstra University Soccer Stadium on Thursday evening. With the tie, the Huskies clinch the fifth seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament, while the Pride will need to wait until James Madison's game this weekend to find out its fate.
With both teams fighting for playoff positioning, the game was a defensive struggle throughout. The Huskies had the first good opportunity in the opening half, but an NU shot was cleared off the end line by Hofstra's Sue Weber.
The two teams remained scoreless until the 57th minute, when Hofstra's Kariena Richards put her team on top. Richards gathered up a deflected direct kick that was taken by teammate Diane Caldwell and beat NU junior goalkeeper Annie Petrofsky for her third goal of the season.
The Huskies fought back, however, to tie the game in the 79th minute. Redshirt freshman Liza Rebello found herself one-on-one with Hofstra goalkeeper Krysten Farriella, and Farriella took down the Husky striker after Rebello attempted to push the ball past the Pride keeper, resulting in a penalty shot for the visitors. Freshman Sophia Palmquist took the kick for Northeastern, and she scored her fourth goal of the season into the upper corner to even the score at one.
After Palmquist's tally, neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of the game. An extra 20 minutes of play after the end of regulation could not separate the teams, and so the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Hofstra maintained a slim 20-18 shot advantage over the Huskies on the evening, as well as a 5-2 edge in corners. Both Petrofsky and Farriella made five saves in goal, while Weber made a very important defensive save in the first half.
With the tie, the Huskies clinch the fifth seed in next week's CAA Tournament. The Huskies will travel to the campus of the fourth seed, which will either be Old Dominion or UNC Wilmington, both of which are 7-3 entering the final weekend of the regular season. The Huskies will play in the CAA Quarterfinals on Monday, with the time and place to be determined.
