The Northeastern University women’s soccer team beat Binghamton, 1-0 in double overtime, for its first win of the season at the Akron Tournament in Akron, Ohio. Sophomore midfielder Sofia Palmquist scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to give the Huskies a 1-0 start to the 2007 season.
“This was the first time the team really had the opportunity to play together because of injuries,” head coach Ed Matz said. “Sofia hasn’t played much this preseason and this was the first time we really got to use her.”
Palmquist fired a shot from 22-yards out on the right side that floated over Binghamton goalie Erin Iman to break the tie after 114 minutes of play.
The Northeastern defense kept the ball away from Husky keeper Annie Petrofsky who made three saves in the game. Brenna Matthews, Emilee Ellison and Laura Johnson stopped the Binghamton offense from scoring throughout a shaky first half before the Huskies were able to regroup at halftime.
“It was a typical first half with a lot of back and forth action,” Matz said. “But we came out and possessed the ball after halftime. We really controlled the rest of the game.”
The Huskies play a second game at the Akron Tournament Sunday Sept. 2 at 2:30 against St. Francis (PA). Northeastern’s first home match is Friday, Sept. 7 when they host Harvard at Parsons Field at 6 p.m.
