Matthews, Ellison named co-captains for 2008 March 27, 2008 Boston, MASenior defenders Brenna Matthews and Emilee Ellison will serve as co-captains of the Northeastern University women's soccer team in 2008, head coach Ed Matz has announced.
Entering her fourth season, Matthews has started in the back for all three of her seasons at Northeastern. She has three goals in 52 career games and helped the Huskies hold opponents to 1.97 goals per game in 2005, 1.11 in 2006 and 1.32 in 2007. She is the second in her family to serve as Northeastern women's soccer captain, following her older sister, Andi, who played for NU from 2001-04 and was team captain in 2004. Matthews is from South Easton, Mass., and graduated from Oliver Ames High School.
Ellison is another fourth-year defender. She has played in 40 matches over her three seasons at Northeastern and started each of her 19 games in 2006 and all 16 games she played in 2007. She is one of the Huskies' key anchors in the back and may also play in the midfield. Ellison is a native of Peabody, Mass., and attended Peabody Veterans Memorial High School.
Northeastern will look to bounce back from a tough 2007 season in which the Huskies posted a 4-11-3 record and a 2-7-2 record in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Huskies dealt with multiple injuries but showed excellent potential when they upset No. 28 James Madison, 1-0, at Parsons Field on Oct. 21. The Huskies posted a 4-0 win over Delaware at Parsons Field five days later.
