The women’s soccer team fell to Manhattan Friday night by a score of 1-0 at Parsons Field in Brookline.
Manhattan’s Brittany Duhamel scored the lone goal with an outside shot that sailed just over the head of Northeastern goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon after she lost her footing at 30:55. This would prove to be the game-winning goal but not before the Husky offense put up a tough fight.
The Huskies outshot the Jaspers 11-3 in the second half however they could not put the ball past Jasper keeper Caitlin Trupiano, who tallied five saves on the night. The closest Husky goal came from forward Jenna Lucchesi, who’s shot sailed just over the crossbar. This was Lucchesi’s first game back since she broke her leg last season on Sept. 30 against Towson.
“The team is coming off of a lot of injuries this year, it’s the first time back for a few players and on top of that, I think it showed in the first half that we started five freshmen. We really picked it up in the second half, unfortunately we just could not get one past the keeper,” said head coach Ed Matz.
The Huskies showed a lot of promise starting five freshmen. Gordon, a freshman, had four saves in her collegiate debut and freshman midfielder, Gabbi Jatkola, gave the offense a lot of good quality scoring opportunities. The two Matthews sisters, Brenna and Kelly, both had defensively sound games and were called upon for numerous free-kick opportunities.
The Huskies leading scorer last season, Liza Rebello, was cleared today after overcoming an injury suffered during the summer. She is expected to make a big impact as the season moves along.
Northeastern will try to rebound this Sunday at Parsons Field when the team takes on the St. Francis Red Flash at 1 p.m.
