The women's soccer team played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, anchored by freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon, ending Sunday's match against St. Francis in a 0-0 tie.
Gordon made six saves and recorded her first collegiate shut out in the game to keep the Red Flash off the scoreboard. At 9:50 left in regulation St. Francis’ Rachel Seibert fired a shot at Gordon but she was able to come up with the initial save and the rebound sending the game to overtime.
In the first overtime it looked as though Veronica Napoli would net the game-winning goal however she was called offside. Defenseman Brenna Matthews also had a chance to win the game with a free kick that sailed just over the crossbar.
“I was very pleased with the way our team responded after the loss Friday. We have a lot of young players on this team and for us to come out here and outshoot a team 19-9 that says a lot about our character. I thought our keeper played extremely well and a lot of that is credited to Matthews and Ellison, they’ve played great the past two nights,” said head coach Ed Matz.
The Huskies hit the road next weekend with games at the University of Minnesota for the Regina Moench Tournament. They play Creighton Friday at 5:30 p.m. (EDT) and Sunday against Ohio at 11:30 (EDT).
