| The women’s soccer team was able to beat out Creighton Friday night to secure the team’s first win of the season. Senior Brenna Matthews scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with 105:50 on the clock in the second overtime.
The penalty kick was awarded after the speedy, Veronica Napoli, split two defenders but was then tripped up in the box. The Huskies win ended the four-game winning streak for Creighton and was also the first lost of the season for the Bluejays.
In the first half, Creighton senior Lindsay Vaught, scored in the first five minutes on a pass from Marcy Gans, to put the Creighton advantage at 1-0. The 1-0 score would remain throughout the game until 88:54 when Huskies midfielder Gabbi Jatkola dribbled the ball through the defense and took a shot from 24 yards out into the top corner for the Huskies first goal of the season which also sent the game into overtime.
“I’m very please with this young team, every game they seem to get better and better. Tonight was a total team effort; everyone from the goalkeeper to the offense played hard and earned this game. Jatkola and Kelly Matthews played excellent like they have all season, watching them play is not only encouraging to me but the rest of the team as well,” said head coach Ed Matz.
This was the first game of the season that Creighton did not score two or more goals. Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon recorded her first collegiate win after making four saves on the night.
For the third straight game, the Huskies outshot their opponents. Friday, they outshot Creighton 21-17.
The Huskies take on Ohio this Sunday at 11:30 (EDT) in their second game of the Regina Moench Tournament.
