The women’s soccer team defeated Ohio 2-0 Sunday against Ohio in their second game at the Regina Moench Tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota.
Both goals were scored by junior, Liza Rebello. The first goal was a header that found the back of the net after sophomore Kristen Blake passed the ball to freshman Veronica Napoli who crossed the ball for Rebello. “That was great play all around,” said coach Matz, “you really couldn’t ask for a better looking goal.”
The second goal was unassisted and scored after Rebello raced up the field and was able to dribble around the goalkeeper and slide it in.
“I know it sounds cliché, but our team is getting better and better every time we get on the field. It was nice to see Rebello back to her old ways after recovering from her injury. Again, I can’t credit our defense and midfielders enough. Steph Gordon came up huge for us, she made some key stops and really played well all game,” said coach Matz.
Gordon recorded her second collegiate shutout on Sunday after making four saves.
Three players from the women's soccer team were named to the Regina Moench Tournament team. Senior defenseman Brenna Matthews, junior forward Liza Rebello and freshman midfielder Gabbi Jatkola were all named to the team. The Huskies came in second at the tournament because the Minnesota Gophers scored more goals overall.
The Huskies take on the University of New Hampshire on Friday at 6 p.m. at Parsons Field in Brookline, Ma.
