The women’s soccer team lost 2-1 against UNC Wilmington on Sunday at Parsons Field. The lone Husky goal was scored by Jenna Lucchesi with an assist from Veronica Napoli at 79:16.
At 15:35 UNC’s Sarah Matthews took a shot from well inside the box that rang off the crossbar and was then able to capitalize on her own rebound and fire one past goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon. At 36:11 Tandy Banks was also able to get one by Gordon as she dribbled through the defense before finding the back of the net. The Huskies seemed to control the first half as they outshot the Seahawks 7-3 but they could not find an answer to goalkeeper Chandler Follett.
The second half looked a little better for the Huskies. At 28:45, Brenna Matthews sent a cross to Lucchesi who was waiting on the far post. Lucchesi was able to head the ball but the shot went just wide. At 11:07 Gabbi Jatkola was able to break free at the top of the box and fired a rocket that was gobbled up by Follett. It wasn’t until the 79th minute that Napoli was able to run down the sideline before dishing a pass to Lucchesi who was waiting just inside the box and was able to beat Follett for the first and only time of the day.
Lucchesi’s goal was her second of the season and last at Parsons Field as the team graduates five seniors. The Huskies head out on a three game road trip as they look to make it into the CAA playoffs.
Follett recorded nine saves while Gordon posted five.
The Huskies travel to James Madison on Friday to take on the Dukes at 7 p.m.
