The women’s soccer team defeated Virginia Commonwealth 3-0 today in Richmond, Va. The three Husky goals were scored by Gabbi Jatkola, Veronica Napoli and Kelly Matthews. Goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon recorded her fifth shutout while making five saves.
Jatkola’s goal, the game-winner, was scored on a direct kick. Jatkola was able to beat the VCU goalkeeper from 20 yards out with a shot that found the bottom corner of the net at 25:08. The goal was unassisted.
The Huskies continued their goal scoring in the second half as Napoli was able to dribble the ball past the defense before breaking into the middle and firing a shot from 10 yards out which found the back of the net. The goal was Napoli’s 11th on the season.
Matthews joined the two other freshmen as she netted a goal on a direct kick at 69:39. Matthews took the shot from 35 yards out, the shot deflected off a VCU player before finding the top right corner for the teams third goal of the game.
Gordon was spectacular between the pipes on Sunday as she tallied five saves and her fifth shutout.
The Huskies face Hofstra on Thursday at 7 p.m. The team needs either a win, a tie or a VCU loss to clinch the final spot in the CAA Tournament. The Huskies now stand at 5-5-0 in the CAA.
