The women’s soccer team defeated Hofstra 2-1 in overtime on Thursday. This win ensures the team a 6th place ranking and a trip to the CAA Payoffs which begin on Tuesday. The game-winning goal was scored by Veronica Napoli and the game-tying goal was netted by Gabbi Jatkola.
The game-winner came at 97:28 after Napoli was able to split the defenders before chasing down the ball and beating the charging goalkeeper. Napoli buried the ball inside the right post for the win and a trip to the playoffs. The goal was unassisted and Napoli’s team leading 12th goal on the season.
The Huskies will head into the playoffs against UNC Wilmington on Tuesday. This is the first time the team has made the postseason since 2006 where they lost to Old Dominion in the quarterfinals.
Jatkola got the game-tying goal in the 85th minute after rushing 60 yards up the field, dribbling through defenders and then fired a shot from 25 yards out which found the upper left corner of the net. This goal was unassisted and is Jatkola’s fourth on the season.
The lone Ram goal was scored by Carol Leurini after she headed the ball on a cross which just beat Stephanie Gordon for the games first goal.
Gordon had three saves on the night while Krystal Robbins made seven for Hofstra.
The Huskies will travel to UNC Wilmington for Tuesdays match-up. The begins at 7 p.m. at UNC's soccer stadium.
