The women’s soccer team defeated the Dukes of James Madison 2-1 on Friday in the CAA semifinals. The Husky goals were scored by Jenna Lucchesi and Gabbi Jatkola.

Lucchesi was able to net the game-winner on a beautiful feed from Erin McGaffigan. The play started when Laura Holmstedt headed the ball inbounds before dishing it off to the charging McGaffigan. McGaffigan was able to dribble through multiple Duke defenders before dishing the pass off to Lucchesi who made one move to beat the Duke goalkeeper.

“I honestly think Lucchesi’s goal was one of the most unbelievable plays I have ever seen,” said assistant coach Kelly Desmond.

The Huskies tied the game with a Jatkola goal at 58:10. The goal was assisted by Kelly Matthews who took a free kick from the right side of the field which hit traffic in front of the net before Jatkola was able to control the ball and fire it past the keeper.

The lone Duke goal was scored on a penalty kick at 39:17. Matthews took down a Duke forward well inside the box which gave Kim Germaine the penalty kick opportunity which she buried in the upper left hand corner of the net.

The semifinal game consisted of excellent play on both sides of the ball. Just two minutes into the game Liza Rebello found her self all alone on the right side of the net. She fired a shot that hit the James Madison goalkeeper directly in the chest and forced a rebound which Veronica Napoli then tried to capitalize on but Diane Wszalek was able to block that as well.

With just nine minutes into the game JMU’s Corky Julien fired a shot on net but Stephanie Gordon was able to make a full-out dive and deflect the ball away. Gordon made six saves in her performance on Friday.

At 15 minutes in, Napoli once again had a wide-open opportunity but her shot was again gobbled up by Wsalek.

Northeastern has won its last four games on the road for the first time ever in women's soccer history.

With the win, the Huskies now move on to the CAA Championship game which takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Hofstra in Williamsburg, Va.
