The Northeastern University women's soccer team beat Hofstra, 1-0 in double overtime, to win the CAA Championship final and advance to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in Williamsburg, Va. Liza Rebello scored the game-winning goal for Northeastern.

"I thought it was a very good game, it was a defensive struggle for most of the match," said head coach Ed Matz. "We started to gain some momentum going into overtime and had a couple chances in the first overtime. Going into the second overtime I told the team we need to take shots when we have the chance since it was a muddy day in front of the goal. It just so happened that there was a shot, the goalkeeper saved it right to Rebello and she was able to put it in for the game-winner."

"This team has done everything I have asked all season, and today is just another example of that," Matz added.

Rebello scored on the rebound of a Gabbi Jatkola shot at 104:54. Jatkola took a shot that Hofstra goalkeeper Krystal Robens initially saved but the ball came out to Rebello, who buried it for the most significant goal in Northeastern women's soccer history.

Northeastern keeper Stephanie Gordon made four saves in the game and earned All-Tournament honors along with forward Jenna Lucchesi and defenders Emilee Ellison and Tinna Neilsen. The Northeastern defense allowed just one goal over three games in the CAA Tournament.

It's the first conference title in women's soccer in Northeastern history and the team will make its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The NCAA Tournament starts on Friday. Northeastern improved to 13-8-1 on the season. The 13 wins are most in team history. Hofstra ended the season with an 11-8-3 record.

Northeastern finished the CAA regular season with a 7-5-0 record to earn the sixth and final seed in the CAA Tournament. Northeastern upended third-seed UNC Wilmington, 1-0, on Tuesday night in the first round, then beat second-seed James Madison, 2-1, in the semifinals to advance to the final. Hofstra was the fifth-seed and defeated No. 1 William & Mary in the semis to advance to the final.

"We're all so thrilled for them to win the CAA title, especially with such a young team going into the CAA Tournament as the six seed," said Northeastern Athletics Director Peter Roby. "They have had an incredible run going on the road to win the final games in the regular season and in the tournament. They have gotten our fall off to a great start and we're hoping they keep going and our other teams can continue with the momentum."

It was the second CAA Championship in any sport since Northeastern joined the conference prior to the 2005-06 athletic season. The women's track & field team won the CAA title in 2007.

The NCAA Tournament selection show is Monday at 8 p.m. and will air live on ESPNEWS. Northeastern will play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 14, at a site to be determined. Northeastern's student radio station, WRBB Radio 104.9 FM, will cover the game live as long as the facility has radio accommodations.
