Ed Matz enters his eighth season at the NU helm after leading the Huskies in their transition from the America East Conference to the Colonial Athletic Association in 2005. Following a successful 2003 campaign in which the Huskies advanced to the America East postseason tournament for the second consecutive season. When Matz was named Northeastern's Director of Soccer in June 1999 - becoming the leader of both the men's and women's programs - the Huskies were struggling. But it didn't take him long to put both teams on course. The men's team had its fifth straight winning season in 2003, posting a 10-7-4 record, while the women's team continues to improve.
In his tenure with the Huskies - nine seasons with the men’s team and eight with the women’s, Matz has compiled a combined record of 191-169-35. He earned his 100th career win in 2000. Over six seasons, Matz steadily improved the men’s team, from a mere five wins in 1997 to a 6-2 conference record in 2002, and won their first America East Conference title, before handing the team over to Brian Ainscough in 2005. He has also steadily improved the Husky women's program, and has posted winning records in four straight seasons.
His first collegiate experience came as a successful coach and recruiter during a five-season stint with the women’s soccer team at Castleton State College (Castleton, Vt.). From 1989-93, Matz led his squad to four consecutive NAIA District V playoff appearances. His peers named him Mayflower Conference Coach of the Year in 1992 and Co-Coach of the Year in 1990 and ’91.
Matz left Vermont in 1993 and moved his coaching residence to Brookline, Mass. where he took the helm of the men’s team at Newbury College. In his one season, he led the team to 12 wins and second place in the Southern New England Athletic Conference.
Matz first came to Huntington Avenue in 1994 as an assistant to head coach Turi Lonero with the men’s team. When Lonero left the helm in ’96, Matz was the obvious choice as successor.
Since taking over as head coach, Matz has made significant steps to improve the program, such as developing an NU-hosted indoor tournament, directing youth camps, and adopting an aggressive overseas recruiting plan that has enticed several of Europe’s finest amateur athletes to Boston. The results have shown with an increased following of soccer by the campus community. On the field, NU has earned its only America East playoff bid under Matz’s direction.
Before moving to the sidelines, Matz distinguished himself between the lines, captaining the Green Mountain College juggernaut squad in 1988 and ’89. A member of the Mayflower All-Conference and NAIA All-District teams, Matz put together an outstanding career, capped by his induction into the Green Mountain Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.
In addition to running all the Husky offseason programs, Matz keeps busy directing NU’s Husky Soccer Academy. He also currently serves as the Girl's Director of Coaching for FC New England Soccer Club. Matz, a native of Woodsville, N.H., earned a bachelor’s degree in Recreation from Green Mountain in 1989 and a master’s degree from Castleton State in 1996. He resides in Milford with his wife Jenn and daughters Mckenzie, 5, and Ally, 2, and Natalie, 5 months.
