Ed Matz enters his 10th season at the helm of the Northeastern women’s soccer team in 2008. After leading the Huskies in their transition from the America East Conference to the Colonial Athletic Association in 2005, Matz took the team to its first CAA Tournament in 2006. He is also in his ninth season as Director of Soccer at Northeastern. After coaching both the men’s and women’s teams for six years in that capacity, Matz shifted his attention fully to the women’s team in 2005 and Brian Ainscough was hired as head men’s soccer coach.
When Matz was named Director of Soccer in 1999, both the men’s and women’s teams were struggling. But it didn’t take him long to put both teams on course. The men’s team won the America East title in 2002, while the women’s team continues to improve each year and has the opportunity to soar to new heights in the Colonial Athletic Association.
In his tenure with the Huskies - nine seasons with the men’s team and nine with the women’s - Matz has compiled a combined record of 157-152-36. He earned his 100th career win with NU in 2000. The men’s team won at least 10 games in five of its last six seasons under Matz.
He has also steadily improved the Husky women’s program. After four losing seasons in the program’s first four years of existence, NU went on to post winning records in its final five seasons in the America East, including an all-time high 12 wins in 2004, before making the jump to the highly-competitive CAA in 2005.
Matz’s first collegiate experience came as a successful coach and recruiter during a five-season stint with the women’s soccer team at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vt. From 1989-93, Matz led his squad to four consecutive NAIA District V playoff appearances. His peers named him Mayflower Conference Coach of the Year in 1992 after earning Co-Coach of the Year honors in both 1990 and ’91.
Matz left Vermont in 1993 and moved his coaching residence to Brookline, Mass., where he took the helm of the men’s team at Newbury College. In his one season, he led the team to 12 wins and a runner-up finish in the Southern New England Athletic Conference.
Matz came to Huntington Avenue in 1994 as an assistant to head men’s soccer coach Turi Lonero. When Lonero left in 1996, Matz was the obvious choice as successor.
After taking over as head coach, Matz significantly improved both the men’s and women’s programs. He developed an NU-hosted indoor tournament, directed youth camps and adopted an aggressive overseas recruiting plan that has enticed several fine athletes to come to Boston.
Before moving to the sidelines, Matz distinguished himself on the field, captaining the Green Mountain College squad in 1988 and ’89. A member of the Mayflower All-Conference and NAIA All-District teams, Matz put together an outstanding career, capped by his induction into the Green Mountain Hall of Fame in 1994.
In addition to running all of the Huskies’ offseason programs, Matz keeps busy directing the Husky Soccer Academy. He also serves as an advisor for the Sachems Football Club, based in Winchester, Mass.
Matz, a native of Woodsville, N.H., earned a bachelor’s degree in Recreation from Green Mountain in 1989 and a master’s degree from Castleton State in ’96. He resides in Milford with his wife Jenn and daughters Mckenzie, 7, Ally, 4, and Natalie, 2.
