Northeastern University head women’s soccer coach Ed Matz announced that 12 student-athletes will join Northeastern for the upcoming 2008 season. The class includes two goalkeepers, four forwards, three midfielders and two defenders.
The 2008 recruiting class will help ensure that the Huskies have quality players on both sides or the ball.
Heather Carpenter (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) joins the Huskies after playing at Ludlowe High School as a midfielder. She is her high school's all-time leading scorer and was named to the Connecticut Post All-Star first team in 2007. Carpenter also participated in the Connecticut State Olympic Development program from 2004-07.
Stephanie Gordon (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) comes to Northeastern as a goalkeeper after being named a Patriot League all-star from 2004-07 while at Rockland High School. She also attended Region I ID camp and participated in the Massachusetts State Olympic Development program from 2005-07.
Annika Hogberg (Storvreta, Sweden/Flagler College) joins NU as a forward after transferring from Flagler College. She was named the Co-Women’s Soccer Player of the Year and Freshmen of the Year by the Independent Collegiate Athletic Association after scoring 18 goals with 6 assists for 42 points.
Laura Holmstedt (Cranston, R.I./La Salle) comes to Northeastern as a forward after helping La Salle Academy win the 2005 Rhode Island state championship. Her team was ranked second in the country that year. Holmstedt participated in the Rhode Island state Olympic Development program from 2002-07, and was named to the Providence Journal Girls Soccer All-State team in 2007.
Gabby Jatkola (Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) joins the Huskies as a midfielder after playing for Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, where she was a Super Y national pool selection from 2004-05. From 2005-07, Jatkola was her high school's leading scorer and was named Eastern Massachusetts All-Star. She participated in the Massachusetts State Olympic Development program in 2003.
Kelly Jones (Sterling, Va./Dominion) comes to NU as a midfielder after captaining her high school team in 2007. That same year, she was also named her high school's Most Valuable Player and was her high school's leading scorer. Jones participated in the Virginia State Olympic Development program from 2006-present.
Kelly Matthews (South Easton, Mass./ Oliver Ames) joins Northeastern as a defender after playing for Oliver Ames High School, helping her team win the state championship as a senior in 2007. That year, she amassed 26 points and was also named Boston Globe Player of the Year Div. II and Eastern Massachusetts State Player of the Year. Matthews also was named All-Hockomock League and first team All-Massachusetts all four years of high school. She is the sister of former 2004 NU captain Andi and current NU captain Brenna.
Erin McGaffigan (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) comes to the Huskies as a midfielder after playing for Dedham High School. She was named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic in 2007.
Veronica Napoli (Newport, R.I./Prout) comes to NU as a forward after playing for The Prout School, where she is the all-time leading scorer with 128 goals and 50 assists. She is on the Region I Olympic Development Pool for 2007-08 and participated in the Rhode Island State Olympic Development program from 2006-08. Napoli captained her team her senior year.
Stefanie Raiola (Bristol, R.I./La Salle) joins NU as a forward after playing for La Salle Academy. She attended Region I Olympic Development Camp from 2004-05 and participated in the Rhode Island State Olympic Development program in 2006.
Michelle Sopko (Glenmoore, Pa./Coatesville) comes to Northeastern as a goalkeeper after playing for Coatesville High School for four seasons. She was named All-Area second team and All-Ches-Mont League second team in 2005. Sopko was also named Team MVP her sophomore and senior years.
Melanie Thomson (Braintree, Mass./Archbishop Williams) joins the Huskies as a defender after playing for Archbishop Williams High School. Thomson was a 2007 PDA finalist and helped her school win the State Cup Championship in 2005. She also participated in the Massachusetts State Olympic Development program in 2007 and she attended Region I ID Camp.
The Huskies went 4-11-3 (2-7-2 CAA) in 2007.
